In 1961, a man named William Ross found a white cat in the barn of McRae farm, in the Tayside Region of Perthshire located in Scotland. The cat name was Susie and was a white female with longhair. It is believed that what happened next is that William, with the help of his wife Mary Ross, were given a kitten with folded ears from Susie's litter. They decided to breed the kitty with shorthair cats including American and Exotic shorthairs. William and Mary worked with a geneticist named Peter Dyte and started a Breeding program, in which they used British shorthairs to breed with folded ear cats. Around 1966, based on their origin, the offspring were named "Scottish Folds" . The breed was introduced to the United States around the 1970's, and later on, the Scottish fold was accepted to be part of shows and competitions.
